IGEA - Adult Education

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The general objectives of Adult Education shall be the same as those of other levels of public education, namely to prepare individuals for full democratic citizenship, to provide them with means for economic improvement and cultural development, and to enrich their personal and family lives. The program shall be sponsored by the Board and shall be controlled and administered in the same general fashion as other parts of the educational program.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM

The extent of the program shall be determined by a balance between community needs and the willingness of the district residents to provide for the program in the school district budget and by individual fees.

TYPE OF ACTIVITIES

The educational needs of the adult district residents may be met by the offering of activities in the following areas:

  • General Academic Education
  • Civic and Public Affairs Education
  • Americanization and Elementary Education
  • Arts and Crafts Education
  • Commercial and Distributive Education
  • Technical, Vocational and Home Economics Education
  • Parent and Family Life Education
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Recreation
  • Safety and Driver Education
  • Remedial and Miscellaneous Education
  • Music and Drama Education

No continuing curriculum shall be fixed, but activities shall be designed to meet the needs and wishes of individuals and of the community.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT

Policies for the program shall be developed by the Board of Education with the advice of the Superintendent, the Director of Adult Education and the Adult Education Advisory Committee.

ADMINISTRATION

The program shall be administered by the Superintendent through the Director of Adult Education, who shall act with the advice of the Advisory Committee.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Adult Education shall be supported by a combination of registration and materials fees. The proportion of the cost of the total program which each individual course must provide shall be decided by the Director of Adult Education with the advice of the Advisory Committee.

An annual estimate of the income and expenditures for the Adult Education Program shall be submitted by the Director of the Superintendent of Schools for consideration as part of the proposed Annual School Budget.

PERSONNEL

The Board shall appoint instructors on the recommendation of the Superintendent and shall set their salaries. No fixed schedule for instructors’ salaries shall be adopted. The best qualified persons available shall be employed as instructors, regardless of whether they or their spouses are employed elsewhere in the school system. Custodial serviceshall be provided on the same basis as it is provided to other parts of the school system.

PHYSICAL FACILITIES

All physical facilities of the school system shall be available for use in the Adult Education Program when they are not scheduled for day school activities. Activities shall not be limited to those which can be conducted in school buildings, but may be conducted at other places or with other facilities within the school district with the prior approval of the Director.
