KBCA - Public Relations Policy

I.  News Releases:

It is important that information about the activities and concerns of our schools be provided to the community in such a way as to give a clear and professionally responsible image of our district.

  1. The Board Chairman (or Vice Chairman in Board Chairman’s absence) shall be the official spokesperson for the Board, and will normally confer with the Superintendent or delegate this duty to the Superintendent, as the Chair deems appropriate.
  2. News releases which are of a district-wide nature or pertain to established district policy shall be the responsibility of the Superintendent.
  3. The Superintendent shall establish regulations for the dissemination of news releases pertaining to individual school and programs.

News releases from individual buildings may be handled by the building principals, with the understanding that issues that have district-wide implications or pertain to sensitive topics will be cleared with the Superintendent’s office.
Notices Sent Home From Schools

Notices sent home by individual teachers or parent or teacher organizations must be cleared with the building principal before they are disseminated.

II.  Interviews With The Press:

  1. Board members should use discretion when contacted by the media regarding school board news.  If the topic is confidential then any such news must first be discussed in executive session.
  2. Individual board members are encouraged to contact the Board President or the Superintendent prior to discussing board business with the media.
  3. Board members have a right to decline comment when questioned by media reporters in person or on the telephone.

III.  News and Press Releases from Committees and Sub-Committees:

News and/or press releases written by Committees assigned by the Kearsarge Regional School Board and by Sub Committees of the Kearsarge Regional School Board must be approved by the Kearsarge Regional School Board before release to the public.

IV.  Public Statements By Individual Board Members:

Nothing in this policy, expressed or implied, is deemed to contravene the right of each individual Board Member to make public statements as individuals.  This policy applies solely to the activities of the Kearsarge Regional School Board Members as Members of the Board and as representatives of the Board, for instance, pubic statements in which they are reporting the position of the Board.
