WHAT IS THE KRSD SUMMER READING PROGRAM?

The Kearsarge Regional School District Summer Reading Program encourages all students to read for pleasure every day during the summer. It supports the Kearsarge Regional School Board’s policy requiring students in going into grades 6-12 to report on books read during the summer. The KRSD has compiled summer reading lists for title suggestions, but students & their families are encouraged to make their own reading choices based on the interests of the students.

Students entering grades 1 - 5 are encouraged to read throughout the summer months. When we are all back to school in August, grade levels 1-5 will meet to reflect on their summer reading. Kindergarten students will gather to celebrate the excitement of reading at home and school.

WHY SHOULD STUDENTS READ DURING THE SUMMER?

Reading is an essential skill that requires practice just like swimming or swinging a baseball bat. Those children who don’t read during the summer may find themselves at a serious disadvantage when they return to school in the fall. According to the U.S. Department of Education, children who read 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, can dramatically increase their reading and writing skills.
