Mentor Program

Elementary students from KRES at Bradford, KRES at New London, Simonds and Sutton Central are paired up with qualified high school students. Each interested high school student will participate in a Mentoring training prior to working with younger students. Their interactions will vary based on each students' availability and need. Some students may visit their Mentee at the Elementary School, or they may have supervised email communication. Parent permission is required before any interaction may occur. Mentees will be referred by their classroom teacher, parent or School Counselor.

What are the benefits of this program?

Mentees have a natural tendency to look up to slightly older youth – they view you as a role model and someone worth listening to. They might be struggling with challenges with friends, academics, or at home – having a trusted friend can help them with challenging times. Students may also have a greater connectedness to school, improve academically, and feel a greater sense of self-esteem.

Mentors also benefit from interacting with a child. High School mentors build personal skills, conflict resolution skills and confidence that can help you prepare for life after high school. Your involvement in the program can also be a meaningful addition to applications for college and future jobs.
