Policies

In the Media Center, students are encouraged to select reading materials appropriate to his/her reading level. Students in grades 4 and 5 are permitted to have up to three items in circulation at a time. Students in grades 2 and 3 are permitted to sign out two books at a time. Students in kindergarten and first grade are permitted to sign out one book at a time. Books are checked out for 2 weeks. Reminders of overdue materials are sent home each month. Students with overdue books, will not be allowed to check out new books until the overdue books are returned. A replacement fee notice will be sent home at the end of the year for any lost or badly damaged books.

Newbery Medal

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Caldecott Medal

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

NH Ladybug Award

The Ladybug Picture Book Award is designed to promote early literacy and honor the best in recent children's picture books. A committee of children's librarians from around the state selects 10 picture book titles early in the year. Then, during Children's Book Week in November, New Hampshire children from preschoolers to those in third grade choose the award winner. The winning picture book is announced at the end of the year.

Great Stone Face Award

This is a New Hampshire Award. Titles are nominated by school librarians, public librarians, teachers and students and voted on by readers during National Library Week in April. These titles are appropriate to students in grades 4-6.

Assessment

Students in grades K-5 will receive an effort grade for library class. The effort grade will be on a scale from 1 - 4. Please see the rubric below on how students will be assessed on their effort grade.
