IHJ - Summer Reading Program

  1. The Board supports a comprehensive system-wide summer reading program. The acquisition and development of the reading skills by all pupils are essential. Reading must be practiced year round. It is the goal of the Board to have students engaged in as much reading as possible as a means to improve overall achievement and performance.
     
  2. Each student enrolled in the Kearsarge Regional School District, regardless of grade level, ability level, or program, will be encouraged and/or required to read during the summer.
     
    1. Students Entering Grades 1-5 will be encouraged to participate in quality summer reading. Reading Specialists and classroom teachers will create and distribute a suggested reading list that will focus on the importance of reading throughout the summer. Parents and families will be asked to help their children meet with success through consistent practice of reading and discussion year round.
    2. Students Entering Grades 6-8 will be encouraged to participate in summer reading. Library Media Specialists and classroom teachers will create and distribute a summer reading list that focuses on the importance of reading throughout the summer. 
    3. Students Entering Grades 9-12 will be encouraged to participate in summer reading. Library Media Specialists, Reading Specialists, and classroom teachers will create and distriubte a summer reading list that focuses on the importance of reading throughout the summer.
       
  3. It will be the responsibility of the principals, reading specialists, teachers and department chairs to oversee the implementation of this policy and to communicate to the Superintendent and Board the progress of implementation.
